New York Art Residency and Studios
Founded in 2007, Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (JTHAR) is a nonprofit artist residency, which invites artists from around the world to create work amidst the beauty of Joshua Tree National Park and connect to the vibrant local artistic community. The residency provides scholarship funds, accommodations, studio space and a gallery exhibition. In addition to the 7-week summer program, JTHAR has expanded to offer year-round monthly residencies.
Artists are selected to attend the residency program by the Joshua Tree HighlandsArtist Residency Board Members. The committee reviews all applications submitted for the program. Selection is based on the merit of the artist’s work and residency proposal.
Scholarship Information: All 2018 chosen artists will receive a scholarship/stipend to be used to defer costs of participating in the program. The residency provides studio spaces and accommodations; scholarship funds can be used toward other expenses such as art materials, transportation, food, etc. Depending on available scholarship funds, 2018 scholarships will amount to between $700- $1,000 per artist. Note: The six week solo artist extension program does not have scholarship awards. Funds can be used towards art supplies, transportation, meals, etc.
Studios and Accommodations: Each artist will be assigned his or her own house in which to live and work for the length of the residency. Artists may choose to work at the JTHAR dedicated studio space- a large shared studio space divided by moveable walls depending on the artists’ needs. Some of the assigned houses are located near the west entrance of Joshua Tree National Park, others are in the areas of Pipes Canyon and Flamingo Heights.
