To celebrate our fifth anniversary, we have dedicated this issue to five of photography’s living legends. These photographers have influenced us, contributed significantly to the medium, and cemented their legacies in an art world that is finally embracing photography as a fine art. There is a long list of photographers who are deserving of the honorary title “living legend,” and this issue is not a “best of” or ranked list. Instead, it reflects on the varied aspects of these legendary artists’ careers: from George Tice’s first exhibition with Susan Spiritus Gallery, to Henry Horenstein’s Honky-Tonk beginnings, to Joyce Tenneson’s influence on women artists, to how Duane Michals inspired one photographer’s hero worship, and to Larry Fink’s thoughts on how photography has changed in his lifetime. In the timeline of art history, photography is still a new medium.
