Crowd Funding Roundup: The Revitalized ELBAFLEX 35mm Camera

Crowd funding is becoming increasingly popular among creatives. With more site springing up and more artists asking for funds, Don’t Take Pictures spotlights projects that benefit the arts community.

This month’s crowd funding roundup presents the development of a classic 35mm Nikon-mount analogue camera.

ELBAFLEX 35mm True Analog Camera:  History Reloaded

When photographers trade megapixels for emulsion and restrict themselves to 36 exposures, they often make some of their most creative work. This is the theory of the engineers from Germany and Ukraine who designed the ELBAFLEX 35mm camera. The camera’s interior is based on Ukrainian technology design manufactured in the Ukrainian Arsenal factory until the late 1980s. The exterior design is based on the famous Gerham Ihagee ELBAFLEX camera but this version includes a wooden grip and leather coating in various colors. Parts of the ELBAFLEX’s interior have been reengineered including the mechanical shutter, and a soft stop on the mirror. The camera is equipped with a Nikon mount for use with a wide variety of lenses.

The makers stress that their initiative is not about nostalgia but rather about catering to a niche audience of analogue photography lovers. Supporting the Kickstarter campaign will get you an ElBAFLEX for $529, a steep discount of the $1,500 retail price once the camera has launched.
