This series spotlights arts organizations, collectives, and initiatives with good causes at their core. Keep up the good work.
See In Black is an anti-racist coalition of Black photographers who invest in, uplift and build community around Black visibility. This new collective was founded in the Summer of 2020 following the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, David McAtee, Tony McDade and other Black Americans. The collective was founded by Joshua Kissi, Micaiah Carter, Dani Kwateng, Andrew Wagner, Florian Koenigsberger, and Anthony Colemen, and is comprised of 80 Black photographers. This past summer, See In Black raised funds for five organizations working to dismantle systemic, race-based oppression through a print sale, the proceeds of which supported organizations for civil rights, education/arts, intersectionality, community building, and criminal justice reform. The profits were distributed to Know Your Rights Camp, Youth Empowerment Project, National Black Justice Coalition, Black Futures Lab, and the Bail Project.
Today, See In Black is a platform and community comprised of storytellers, artists and documentarians of Black visual narratives who tell their communities’ stories with intention, respect, nuance and care. The collective supports its members in three distinct initiatives: by supporting exhibitions and sales to showcase the members’ work, and providing critical resources, including studio space; by providing educational programming and fostering professional opportunities; and building community by facilitating conversations and relationships between members through events, talks and mentorship.
