In Motion: Drew Christie's Animations of Early Photographers

Photography as we know it has come a long way from the first “fixed shadows” in the 19th century. Commissioned by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s Photographic Interpretive Center, animator Drew Christie created a series of shorts about photography’s early pioneers. Christie’s quirky and informative animations are beautifully produced, highlighting photography’s early years when so much was unknown about the medium and every breakthrough seemed like magic.

Sun Pictures chronicles the life Henry Fox Talbot who created the photographic negative.

Slices of Time explores Eadweard Muybridge and the development of motion picture projection.

Peaks and Perils explains how landscape photographer Carleton Watkins used his photographs to convince Congress to preserve Yosemite as a National Park.
