Hans de Kort “writes with light” to create wet collodion portraits in his studio. He uses a historical photographic technique called light painting in which he moves a hand-held light over his subject and background during a long exposure. The results are unpredictable but can achieve a wonderfully luminous rendering of the subject. In these short films, we can experience de Kort’s studio practice while he light paints a ballerina for a tintype. Behind the darkroom door we can see how the plate is made and the meticulous efforts that de Kort makes for his art.
