In Motion: Ivan Cash

This series showcases those who have expanded their artistic palate, moving from still to motion, or motion to still.

In the age of the smartphone, everyone is a photographer. Filmmaker Ivan Cash has embarked on a project that explores how mobile photography has permeated our culture in the most mundane ways. In “Last Photo Project” Ivan Cash takes to the streets of major metro areas and asks strangers to show and explain the most recent photograph on their phone. The responses range from the banal—a broken lamp that needs to be returned—to the embarrassing, to the celebratory pregnancy announcement.

The production is simple and refrains from the slick commercial feel of other “strangers-on-the-street” videos adding to the authenticity of the experiment. While Instagram and other social media may highlight people’s more considered and artistic photographs, Cash’s video series shows the less glamorous side to always having a camera at hand and raises questions about how we determine what gets shared and what remains private.
