Seattle Mayor Edward B. Murray proclaimed Friday, June 19, 2015 a citywide day of photography. If only every city placed such importance on the arts! To celebrate the day, Seattle’s own Photographic Center Northwest hosted Long Shot, their annual summer fundraiser.
Photographic Center Northwest is an educational institution that holds workshops, exhibitions, and other superb photography-related events. Like many great photography centers, finding funding to keep these programs thriving is a top priority. To raise money and showcase photographers, PCNW developed Long Shot to be a creative and community-oriented event. It began with a 24-hour global community photo shoot on Friday. For $20, photographers around the world engaged in image making in furtherance of their own art and in support for Photographic Center Northwest. The next day, each participating photographer submitted up to five photographs from their shoot. A panel of industry professionals selected one photograph from each photographer to be printed and exhibited at PCNW on Sunday.
As one of the jurors for this event, I thoroughly enjoyed being able to see what was going on all over the world in the course of a single day. Exhibiting one photograph from every photographer made Long Shot an inclusive event for amateurs and professionals alike.
